A couple of months back, Facebook decided to disable the messaging service from its mobile app and eventually left the users with the only option of installing Facebook Messenger app. While this move was widely criticised, users had to forcefully install Facebook messenger to chat with their friends. As a result, the penetration for Facebook Messenger app increased and it is now ranked as the world’s 2nd most popular messaging app behind WhatsApp [as per the report published by GlobalWebIndex].

So did this move affect the popularity of its mobile app? A look at our ODM data amongst Android panelists from US reveals that while adoption of Facebook Messenger app is indeed on a rise, the Reach of Facebook app dropped over the last few months - from 74% in May ‘14 to 64% in August ‘14.
