Trending across several technology sites and blogs last month was the emergence of social pinboards specifically for men. Now men who cannot stand the overwhelmingly feminine Pinterest have “Pinterest-for-dudes” alternatives like Manterest, Dudepin or Gentlemint, where they can ‘nail’ and ‘bump’ pictures instead of ‘pinning’ or ‘liking’.

While it’s too early to evaluate the popularity of these new properties, this week we take a look at the current top 10 social networks on mobile through the gender lens. Social networking is inarguably the most popular activity on Smartphones both among men and women. But women outnumber men on 6 of the top 10 social networks. Women heavily over-index on Pinterest and Foursquare, whereas Linkedin and Tagged have a higher proportion of male users.
