Facebook made its biggest and most significant acquisition with the WhatsApp buyout. The move strengthens Facebook’s presence in the mobile space - which it has been struggling to monetize. However, more importantly, Facebook has managed to quell its most significant competitor in mobile across markets, which is not a rival social networking app, but the messenger service - WhatsApp.
The usage numbers from Informate’s Smartphone panels in 8 markets show WhatsApp towering over or at least at par in 5 key markets in Asia, Middle East and Africa. Makes the deal sweet for Facebook, doesn’t it?
