Chat apps are now an indispensable part of Smartphone usage globally. From bigger players like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts etc to the newbies like WeChat, Hike, LINE, we see a frenzied competition vying for the share of the users screen. While the traditional messaging [SMS] seems to be pushed to the background, our question this time is : would user preferences for chat apps differ across countries?
Our on-device mobile measurement data reveals that Chat as a genre is relatively less popular in US and shows 7x times lower engagement than their counterparts in India. Users in US are mainly adults and females while in India, youth and males form the majority. The preference for Chat apps brands also show some variation with Hangouts being the most popular app amongst Americans while WhatsApp Messenger takes the top spot amongst Indians.
